Officer
William Robert Fortye

EOW October 28, 1966

Officer William Robert Fortye joined the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on October 10, 1961.  On October 28, 1966, Officer Fortye radioed that he was stopping a northbound car on Highland Drive.  Ten minutes later, he was dead.  His assailant, in a savage struggle with the officer, had pulled Officer Fortye’s gun from its holster and shot him.  Officer Fortye’s police dog, “Burgie,” attacked the suspect.  Officer Fortye was 32.
